DOE withholding money for Los Alamos lab cleanup

AP/SF Chronicle -Tuesday, December 30, 2003

The U.S. Department of Energy is withholding extra money for cleanup at Los Alamos National Laboratory because the state and the federal government have failed to reach regulatory agreement.

Agreement is necessary before as much as $43 million in cleanup money is released to the lab, said Jessie Roberson, head of DOE's environmental management program.

The funding is meant to help with an accelerated cleanup plan at Los Alamos that calls for removing some 9,100 cubic meters of transuranic waste in temporary storage and cleaning up groundwater contamination and hundreds of surface waste sites by 2015.

Lab officials said their schedule is in jeopardy if the funding continues to be withheld.
