Indiana Guard Training for Martial Law?

Sunday, April 6 2003 - Portage, Indiana

Several National Guard units from throughout Indiana are training at the Port of Indiana on Lake Michigan this weekend to enforce martial law by cracking down on protests OF ALL KINDS. The training is dubbed the "Hoosier Guardian" exercise and is intended to certify National Guard units for homeland "defense". According to local media, police from local, state, and federal agencies joined more than four hundred soldiers of Guard units from throughout the state to take part in the operation, coordinated by Indiana's State Emergency Management Agency. To date, more than 1,200 soldiers in Indiana have been similarly trained. While officials and corporate media stress that this was anti-terrorism training, much of this operation intended to quell civil protests and work-related demonstrations at industrial sites. Fellow guardsmen portrayed working-class "demonstrators" and "protesters" who shouted anti-military chants, carried anti-government posters, and staged sit-down strikes. The Port of Indiana is located along an industrial corridor with an economy that has been ravaged by the bankruptcies of the steel industry and county governments, massive layoffs, and the elimination of insurances for retired steel workers. Guardsmen, armed with M-16 rifles and clubs, attacked the "strikers" and "protesters" who were both picketing and holding a sit-down strike at the time the armed soldiers moved in on them. The "strikers" and "protesters" were fellow guardsmen dressed as demonstrators. One "protester" carried a sign reading "Remember Waco" while another carried a sign reading "Big Brother is Back". "We're here to protect this industrial site," Indiana Guard Capt. Richard McKinney told Gary Post-Tribune writer Tim Zorn as mock protestors yelled, "Hey hey, ho ho, the National Guard has got to go." What is your local Guard unit doing?
