Thousands of Protestors, but "G8 leaders all smiles"

"...In an annual summit ritual, tens of thousands of protesters staged demonstrations in French and Swiss regions beyond the heavily guarded security perimeter of the lakeside summit. They spoke out on everything from anti-globalization and environmentalism to forgiveness of Third World debt and fears over genetically modified foods.

Demonstrators blocked traffic for hours on bridges and highways around Geneva, across the lake from the meeting. Swiss police estimated the crowd at 50,000; protest organizers said it numbered 120,000..."

"...This Sunday June 1st, activists were out on the streets in the early morning hours, long before the G8 summit started in Evian. Crossroads in Lausanne, bridges in Geneva (map | pics 9am) and main access roads from Annemasse towards Evian (map, 8 am)were blocked as early as 6am, with rhythms, soundsystems, dancing and colour. Later the police moved in with increasing heavyness.

Martin Shaw, a British activist, who had abseiled from a motorway bridge near Aubonne broke was injured, when the police cut the rope he was hanging from. He fell 20 m deep and is now in hospital.."
