LONDON, England -- A former senior British minister has accused the government of using intelligence on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction to justify a predetermined policy.
Speaking to a parliamentary inquiry on whether Tony Blair's government misled the public about the evidence it had on illegal weapons held by Saddam Hussein, former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said there was no "full consideration of evidence."
The multi-party House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee is investigating claims that reports saying that former Iraqi leader Saddam's regime was in possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) were overstated.
It is examining, in particular, the government's statement before the war that Iraq was capable of launching such weapons within 45 minutes -- a claim widely disputed among MPs and those outside the Blair government...
...Former International Development Secretary Clare Short, who also resigned from the Cabinet after the war, also told the inquiry on Tuesday that Blair and U.S. President George W. Bush decided to go to war last summer -- and that it had to be in the spring. Short said this was the reason why U.N. chief weapons inspector Hans Blix was not allowed any more time to search for evidence in Iraq.
Norway rubs salt into Bush's war wound
The pressure against the US and Great Britain is increasing as no weapons of mass destruction have yet been found. On Tuesday Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik rubbed salt into the wounds.
«It is interesting that no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq», said Bondevik during a conference in Oslo on Tuesday.
«As long as no weapons of mass destruction have been found, it strengthens the stand Norway took against the war», the PM said, stressing that the whole point of the war was the fear that weapons of mass destruction existed in Iraq..."

Real 'NY Times' Scandal: Hyping WMDs in Iraq
"...Even more serious for "the newspaper of record" than plagiarism and falsification of facts by a junior reporter (Jayson Blair) is a star reporter embedded with the Central Command filing very shaky stories that get by editors in New York and wind up on the front page of the Times, purporting to provide evidence to back up the primary reasons given by the Bush Administration for the necessity of invading Iraq. Talk about "news" without a compass!
In a May 26 editorial -- "Reviewing the Intelligence on Iraq" -- the Times welcomed a CIA post-war review of intelligence assessments of WMDs in Iraq. The failure to find such weapons so far raised "even dark hints that the data may have been manipulated to support a pre-emptive war."
Was this editorial -- and another on June 1 ("The Bioweapons Enigma") -- meant to head off a barrage of criticism aimed at the newspaper's reports from the field in April and May? For the same specific concerns directed at the government must be raised in any honest review of the reporting of the search for WMDs in Iraq by the Times' Judith Miller..."
