Franco Frattini (Foreign Minister Italy)
"...Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini denied again on Tuesday that intelligence services provided documentation to foreign services on the issue, but declined to give details about whether any internal documents or intelligence existed.
''Italy, that is the entire Italian intelligence services, never, I say never, delivered documentation relating to this controversy to the services of other countries,'' Frattini told a meeting with foreign media.
When pressed, Frattini said the reason no papers had been handed over to foreign intelligence services was either because the documents did not exist or because Italy did not think they should be delivered into the hands of other countries.
Frattini also confirmed that Rome investigators had opened a file into the Italian intelligence's alleged role in the case.
Judicial officials told Reuters that at this point they saw no evidence of wrong-doing but that in Italy, if someone makes an allegation of any kind, an investigation must be opened..."

US spied on ex-premier

"...The United States listened in on telephone conversations between Italy's then-prime minister, socialist Giuliano Amato, and one of his ministers, public television station Rai announced.
The revelation, which was broadcast yesterday and carried by all Italian Sunday papers, comes after Rai journalists accessed documents declassified by the US Freedom of Information Act.
While the transcript of the tape remains classified, the conversation between the ministers was the subject of a telex sent by the US ambassador to Rome at that time, Peter Secchia, to the US State Department, Rai reported..."
