Reuters -Thu September 4, 2003
French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Thursday they were not ready to accept U.S. proposals that could lead to a new United Nations resolution on Iraq.
"We are ready to examine the proposals but they seem quite far from what appears to us the primary objective, namely the transfer of political responsibility to an Iraqi government as soon as possible," Chirac told a joint news conference.
Schroeder said that the proposals showed movement in the U.S. position but did not go far enough.
The United States has drafted a new resolution for the U.N. Security Council aimed at inducing more nations to send troops and money to support the U.S.-led occupation.
