Pacifist American Rappers Top UK Singles Chart

WP/Reuters - September 7, 2003

LONDON (Reuters) - American hip-hop crew Black Eyed Peas have knocked Elton John from the top of the British singles chart with their pacifist ballad "Where Is The Love?"

The Peas have raised eyebrows in the world of hip-hop by rejecting the common formula of macho gun-toting lyrics in favor of political soul-searching.

The single, featuring vocals by Justin Timberlake, examines mounting world conflict in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Dotmusic about the record:
To their credit, Black Eyed Peas haven't plastered Justin Timberlake's name all over this record, but it's hard to ignore the fact that everyone's favourite pop star not only co-wrote but provided guest vocals for this uplifting hip-hop ballad.

In the current political climate, it's not hard to unravel the meaning behind 'Where Is The Love?' and the Black Eyed Peas - who have always opted for social commentary over clichéd hip-hop rhymes - are in their element pondering the state of the post 9/11 world.
