PUBLIC servants were deliberately dressed up as police officers to bolster numbers during the visit to Canberra of President George W. Bush, it has been revealed.
As F/A-18 Hornets and helicopters buzzed overhead, bureaucrats switched roles to be part of the nation's biggest security blitz – armed with nothing more than pens and water bottles.
In a major embarrassment for authorities, it has been revealed almost one in nine of the "police" assigned to protect the world's most powerful man last week actually was a civilian.
They were deployed at various places including The Lodge, the US embassy and Parliament House.
