Anniston (AP) - An alarm sounded in a laboratory at the Army's chemical weapons incinerator Friday indicating the presence of sarin, but officials said they weren't sure how the nerve agent got there. No one was hurt, and an official said the agent levels were so low workers would not have been injured had they been exposed. "This is not indicative of a major failure. All it does is pose a minor mystery," said Mike Abrams, a spokesman for the incinerator, located at the Anniston Army Depot. An alarm sounded about 1:15 a.m. CDT indicating the presence of GB nerve agent, or sarin, in an unoccupied room inside a 10,000-square-foot lab. A test verified that the alarm really had detected sarin, Abrams said, but it failed to detect any more of the agent.
"Agent appeared, was detected, and just as quickly disappeared," he said. Small, sealed vials containing diluted amounts of sarin are used in the laboratory to calibrate equipment, but it was unclear how nerve agent got into the room's environment.
