IMPORTANT re: March 15th protest and new activism opportunity
The timing of this is serendipitous, I pray, considering the Gore news/mayhem/heartbreak we are currently enduring. When leaders fail to lead, choose not to lead, or otherwise abdicate, it falls to us to pick up the slack. Thus it ever was, and should be. We're where we are now because too many failed to apprehend this. Maybe we can fix that.
First, a disappointing announcement. After months and months of trying, after phone call after phone call and conference after conference, after trying our best, it has become clear that matcom and I will not be able to but together the March 15th 'Ides of March' protest in Washington, DC. If this is new to you, check out www.participatory-democracy.org and read the mission statement.
The logistics were too much. Please understand that we tried. If you have now an idea that could help, know that we've already had it. If you have a friend that can assist in organizing this, know that we've already talked to them. Morosely, there is not a market in the activist commiunity for a protest that is 'for' something. We tried. We failed. That's the way it is.
BUT
Here is the good news. Not long ago, I wrote a truthout piece called 'Here. Now.' and another called 'The Homeland Security Quiz.' One spoke of getting active individually - do something - and described the pamphleting program myself, matcom, DS1, mclam, marshallplan and other DUers have done. The other was itself a pamphlet. Basically, we work up a sheet of bullet points the news ignores, along with alternate media sources, make about 500 copies, and hand them out on streetcorners. Do something.
I have been contacted by none other than Granny D., who is wild about the pamphlet idea. Along with her contact came one from Ronnie Dugger, whose amazing words at the May 19th 2001 protest in Washington are captured here. A snip, for your edification:
