WMD Quotes By * and His Admin"Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof -- the smoking gun -- that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud." Remarks by the President on Iraq On another occasion in those early days of war fever, Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair cited a "new" report supposedly from the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency saying Iraq was "six months away" from having a nuclear weapon. "I don’t know what more evidence we need, " said Bush. more... ( NOTE: International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA’s chief spokesman, Mark Gwozdecky, said on September 26, 2002 - just after bush and blair made the above remarks) that no such evidence existed to support claims of a nascent Iraqi nuclear program. ) *NEW* MP3 Audio File of their LIES! here... The Facts Will Show the World the Truthby DU's justicebuilder In all the yelling and screaming I’ve forgotten one of my favorite trivial pleasures - laughing at stupid stuff that George W. Bush says in public. Before the Iraq war, I routinely searched through transcripts of interviews and speeches for a few little off-the-cuff nuggets of anti-wisdom. My favorite Dubyaisms were the empty language Bush used when he was trying to sound deep and thoughtful, like when he opined “One interesting issue is North Korea.” Wow. Since March, though, like most people who opposed the war, I have been too caught up in outrage, shock and shame to take much joy in the President’s gaffes. Then today, lo and behold, I am presented with just the sort of Flubya that used to make me collapse in gales of laughter. Bush told a reporter in South Africa that he was confident that “the facts will show the world the truth.” Unfortunately, I have trouble laughing at this statement, as stupid and meaningless as it clearly is on its face. I find this near-tautology unfunny because under the surface it reflects a belief that is held dearly not only by Bush himself but by his most ardent followers - that right now, the facts are lying. The facts, according to this strange worldview, MUST be lying, because the picture they paint of our Great President is not a pretty one. Let’s have a quick review of the facts, shall we? more... Uncovering Bush's Weapons of Mass DestructionSome commentators are beginning to call this “Weaponsgate.” Though the lies are enormous, public outrage has yet to catch up by Mark Pickens 07/07/03: (IndyMedia) Lies. It’s the “L” word that almost killed Clinton. And now with Iraq, Bush and Co. find themselves on the political defensive for the very first time. After nearly two years of patriotic photo-ops, growing ranks of fearful Americans hungry for leadership, and a free pass on a stagnant economy that would sink any other president’s credibility, Bush may finally feel a twinge of fear. One hundred days from the fall of Baghdad and still no weapons of mass destruction. The evidence that Bush lied is readily available. Disaffected CIA and other intelligence officers have leaked a variety of secret reports, resentful for being ignored before the war and now blamed for faulty intelligence. UK Prime Minister Blair is being pilloried by his own party, with the BBC, The Guardian newspaper and others providing ammunition. In America, a sweeping range of public figures is trying to turn a spark into a bonfire under Bush’s chair, including ultra-conservative Pat Buchanan, several residents of The New York Times editorial pages, and even Richard Nixon’s former Watergate counsel John Dean (who should know something about lying). Some commentators are beginning to call this “Weaponsgate.” Though the lies are enormous, public outrage has yet to catch up and Bush still enjoys popularity ratings in the sixties. But, as John Dean might point out, it took two years and an insistent campaign for the truth before Nixon was pinned on his lies. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4021.htm FLEISCHER SAYS BUSH DID NOT HAVE ACCURATE INFORMATION…….ABOUT NIGER AND IRAQ BEFORE HIS 2003 STATE OF UNION ADDRESS DU: peterh DU: CheshireCat (1653 posts) Jun-03-03, 09:36 AM (ET) I know this list of quotes is long, but it is very revealing to compare what was said about WMD in the beginning and to see it change as time passes. It would be funny if it weren't so tragic. These quotes may help you when you are trying to convince someone the war was unnecessary. I received them by e-mail from the CounterPunch Wire. Chessy Every day Saddam remains in power with chemical weapons, biological weapons, and the development of nuclear weapons is a day of danger for the United States. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-CT, September 4, 2002 Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. Dick Cheney August 26, 2002 If we wait for the danger to become clear, it could be too late. Sen. Joseph Biden D-Del., September 4, 2002 Right now, Iraq is expanding and improving facilities that were used for the production of biological weapons. George W. Bush September 12, 2002 If he declares he has none, then we will know that Saddam Hussein is once again misleading the world. Ari Fleischer December 2, 2002 We know for a fact that there are weapons there. Ari Fleischer January 9, 2003 Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent. George W. Bush January 28, 2003 We know that Saddam Hussein is determined to keep his weapons of mass destruction, is determined to make more. Colin Powell February 5, 2003 Iraq both poses a continuing threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region and remains in material and unacceptable breach of its international obligations by, among other things, continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability, actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability, and supporting and harboring terrorist organizations. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, February 5, 2003 We have sources that tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders to use chemical weapons -- the very weapons the dictator tells us he does not have. George Bush February 8, 2003 So has the strategic decision been made to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction by the leadership in Baghdad? I think our judgment has to be clearly not. Colin Powell March 8, 2003 Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised. George Bush March 18, 2003 We are asked to accept Saddam decided to destroy those weapons. I say that such a claim is palpably absurd. Tony Blair, Prime Minister 18 March, 2003 Well, there is no question that we have evidence and nformation that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, biological and chemical particularly . . . all this will be made clear in the course of the operation, for whatever duration it takes. Ari Fleisher March 21, 2003 There is no doubt that the regime of Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction. As this operation continues, those weapons will be identified, found, along with the people who have produced them and who guard them. Gen. Tommy Franks March 22, 2003 I have no doubt we're going to find big stores of weapons of mass destruction. Kenneth Adelman, Defense Policy Board , March 23, 2003 One of our top objectives is to find and destroy the WMD. There are a number of sites. Pentagon Spokeswoman Victoria Clark March 22, 2003 We know where they are. They are in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad. Donald Rumsfeld March 30, 2003 Saddam's removal is necessary to eradicate the threat from his weapons of mass destruction Jack Straw, Foreign Secretary 2 April, 2003 Obviously the administration intends to publicize all the weapons of mass destruction U.S. forces find -- and there will be plenty. Neocon scholar Robert Kagan April 9, 2003 I think you have always heard, and you continue to hear from officials, a measure of high confidence that, indeed, the weapons of mass destruction will be found. Ari Fleischer April 10, 2003 We are learning more as we interrogate or have discussions with Iraqi scientists and people within the Iraqi structure, that perhaps he destroyed some, perhaps he dispersed some. And so we will find them. George Bush April 24, 2003 Before people crow about the absence of weapons of mass destruction, I suggest they wait a bit. Tony Blair 28 April, 2003 There are people who in large measure have information that we need . . . so that we can track down the weapons of mass destruction in that country. Donald Rumsfeld April 25, 2003 We'll find them. It'll be a matter of time to do so. George Bush May 3, 2003 I am confident that we will find evidence that makes it clear he had weapons of mass destruction. Colin Powell May 4, 2003 I never believed that we'd just tumble over weapons of mass destruction in that country. Donald Rumsfeld May 4, 2003 I'm not surprised if we begin to uncover the weapons program of Saddam Hussein -- because he had a weapons program. George W. Bush May 6, 2003 U.S. officials never expected that "we were going to open garages and find" weapons of mass destruction. Condoleeza Rice May 12, 2003 I just don't know whether it was all destroyed years ago -- I mean, there's no question that there were chemical weapons years ago -- whether they were destroyed right before the war, (or) whether they're still hidden. Maj. Gen. David Petraeus, Commander 101st Airborne May 13, 2003 Before the war, there's no doubt in my mind that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, biological and chemical. I expected them to be found. I still expect them to be found. Gen. Michael Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps May 21, 2003 Given time, given the number of prisoners now that we're interrogating, I'm confident that we're going to find weapons of mass destruction. Gen. Richard Myers, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff May 26, 2003 They may have had time to destroy them, and I don't know the answer. Donald Rumsfeld May 27, 2003 For bureaucratic reasons, we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction (as justification for invading Iraq) because it was the one reason everyone could agree on. "If we know Saddam has weapons of mass destruction -- and we do -- does it make any sense for the world to wait to confront him?" "It (Iraq regime) possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons. It is seeking nuclear weapons . . . we know that the regime has produced thousands of tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, sarin nerve gas, and VX gas" George Bush*, October 7, 2002 "His (Saddam Hussein's) regime has large, unaccounted-for stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and he has an active programme to acquire and develop nuclear weapons." Donald Rumsfeld, January 20, 2003 "Every statement I make today is backed up by sources, solid sources. These are not assertions. What we're giving you are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence. "In fact, they (Iraqi regime) can produce enough dry biological agent in a single month to kill thousands upon thousands of people. Saddam Hussein has never accounted for vast amounts of chemical weaponry: 550 artillery shells with mustard, 30,000 empty munitions, and enough precursors to increase his stockpile to as much as 500 tons of chemical agents. If we consider just one category of missing weaponry, 6,500 bombs from the Iran-Iraq war. . . Our conservative estimate is that Iraq today has a stockpile of between 100 and 500 tonnes of chemical-weapons agent. Even the low end of 100 tonnes of agent would enable Saddam Hussein to cause mass casualties across more than 100 square miles of territory, an area nearly five times the size of Manhattan" Colin Powell, address to the UN Security Council, February 5, 2003 "It is right (going to war) because weapons of mass destruction, chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, are a real threat to the security of the world and this country" Tony Blair, House of Commons, January 15, 2003 "What I believe the assessed intelligence has established beyond doubt is that Saddam has continued to produce chemical and biological weapons, and that he has been able to extend the range of his ballistic missile programme. His (Saddam Hussein's) military planning allows for some of the WMD to be ready within 45 minutes of an order to use them." Tony Blair, Foreword to Iraq "dossier" later proved to be mostly plaigarized work of a grad student in California
So here we are, months after the invasion and where is all this evidence they claimed to have, which was the justification for the deaths of 170 American Soldiers (still rising as of last night) and 5000 Iraqi's killed? We may indeed find WMD at some point, but it's clear after the decisive defeat of Iraq in less than three weeks that the WMD justification was either deliberately or negligently overstated by Bush and his underlings. The threat of Saddam was a paper tiger. But hey, at least we got the oil, right? Maybe there's a good reason the rest of the world fails to be convinced by President Bush*; maybe the son of bitch is just a liar. *unelected See also...Here is a searchable/sortable highly organised list here...
