Homeland insecurity

By Fred Kaplan, SLATE.COM (6/7/03)

"...Plugging cops into the database. It is well-known that, on Sept. 9, 2001, Ziad Jarrah -- one of the terrorists who, two days later, would take over United Flight 93 before it crashed in Pennsylvania -- was stopped on I-95 by a Maryland patrolman for going 90 mph in a 65-mph zone. The patrolman gave Jarrah a $270 ticket for speeding and let him drive on to his destiny.

After the fact, many lamented that 9/11 might have been averted had the cop known Jarrah was on a "watch list." Jarrah could have been arrested and interrogated; maybe he would have squealed, or his collaborators might have nervously called their plan off.

The remarkable thing is that if the same thing happened tomorrow -- nearly 21 months after 9/11 -- the Maryland cop, or any other state or local cop, would still have no way of knowing whether the person he stopped was on a federal list of terrorists. Police do have access to a list of the feds' outstanding criminal warrants; though that's a different list, it does suggest the technical feasibility of plugging the cops into the terrorists' watch-list, as well..."

Mysteries around Siad Jarrah

from "911Skeptics United -the encyclopedia"

Ziad Jarrah visited with Mohammed Atta, Marwan Al-Shehhi the same Hamburg mosque, Al Quds and knew all tenants of Atta's home address, 54 Marienstr., one of them Ramzi Binalshibh.

Another regular visitor and friend of Atta was Mamoun Darkazanli, a Syrian-born executive in Germany, who had been observed by the german Intelligence BND since 1997.

Due to DER SPIEGEL, since 1998, the BND forwarded their updates on Mohammad Atta also to the CIA, but never received any response.

However, Darkanzali was on a watch list of the CIA since at least 1999 and, due to a Chicago Tribune report, they even tried to hire him as an informant:

"Early two years before the Sept. 11 hijackings, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency began persistent efforts to recruit as an informer a Syrian-born Hamburg businessman with links to Al Qaeda and the key hijackers, the Tribune has learned.

The CIA's attempts to enlist Mamoun Darkazanli were initiated in late 1999...

...the disclosure that the CIA was seeking to turn Darkazanli into a spy during the time the initial hijacking plans were being laid represents the earliest and deepest set of U.S. intelligence footprints outside the hijackers' window..."

In April 2002 it came out, that the official pilot and hijacker of Flight93, Ziad Jarrah, still received some newsletters by the FAA.

How was that possible? Did the FBI never show up at the FAA or did someone block this investigation, too?

Kathleen Bergen, an FAA (->) spokeswoman in Atlanta, said that she did not know why Ziad Samir Jarrah's name had not been removed from the mailing list earlier.

The incident came to light just weeks after it was disclosed that the Immigration and Naturalization Service sent official notice to a Florida flight school six weeks after the attacks that two of the other hijackers had been approved for student visas.

The FAA newsletter was mentioned by Charles Lisa (->), a landlord, who was already involved in another hijacker-connected "coincidence".

As reported, Al Haznawi and other hijackers lived and attended flight school near the Boca Raton headquarters of American Media Inc., where the first anthrax case surfaced. Al Haznawi entered the United States on June 8, records show. Sometime that month, he moved into an apartment in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (Delray Beach) with another suspected hijacker, Ziad Samir Jarrah, according to statements last fall by the building's landlord, Charles Lisa (->).

Jarrah was accused by the FBI to have been one of the 19 hijackers of Sep11th, however his name was missing on the passenger manifest of Flight 93, together with Saeed Alghamdi, Ahmed Alhaznawi and Ahmed Alnami.

Furthermore there is compelling evidence that Ziad Jarrah was in two locations at the same time on more than one occasion.

Also almost unknown, as investigative journalist Daniel Hopsicker remarked, "left out of most news accounts is the fact Siad Al-Jarrah learned to fly next door to Dekker’s operation at a second flight school, that of Arne Kruithof, like Dekker's a native of the Netherlands."

Interesting also the fact, that more than seven months before the Sept. 11 hijackings, authorities in Dubai detained and questioned Jarrah at the request of the U.S. government - before allowing him to continue his journey from Afghanistan to Florida, according to a United Arab Emirates official.

Due to Jarrahs fiance, he planned a marriage. An LA Times article revealed, that Aysel Senguen was for five years — almost from the day they met in Germany in the spring of 1996 — in love with Ziad Jarrah.

Which Jarrah was on the plane? Was it a stand-in or wasn't he on the plane at all? Did Jarrah really take over the plane as a pilot or was Flight 93 just shot down, as many independent investigators believe?

The CIA claimed, that Jarrah, was not on a terrorist watch list, but according to motel records, a man by that name used a credit card to pay for a late August 2001 stay at the Pin Del motel in Laurel, Md., where Nawaq Alhamzi stayed in September.

Alhamzi was on the CIA watch list.

CNN cited in February 2002 Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley, who said: "Local law enforcement officials should have been told by the FBI that Jarrah was on a CIA watch list"

Officially Jarrah was with Mohammad Atta at Portland Airport, only a few hours sleep at Comfort Inn, before they left to "their mission", but only Atta was shot on a "security camera".

Due to the indictment of Zacarias Moussaoui, "in or about August 2000, Ziad Jarrah (#93) attempted to enroll Ramzi Binal-Shibh in a flight school in Florida", but Binalshib was since then never interrogated on that. The whereabouts of Binalshib are furthermore unknown.

The CIA claimed, that they captured him with the help of Pakistan Secret Service, ISI.

In Summer 2001, Ziad Jarrah opened a Florida SunTrust bank account with a cash deposit. How much money was on that account?

What was the reason of joining a gym in Florida and taking a course in martial arts lessons, when they later decided to use "boxcutters"?

On or about July 25, 2001, Ziad Jarrah traveled from the United States to Germany, but the reason for this trip was also never explained. Did he visit his girlfriend and why wasn't she interviewed on that?

Due to the indictment, Jarrah returned to the United States on August 3, 2001. Was that the real Jarrah?

The Indictment claims, that "on or about August 22, 2001, in Miami, Florida, Ziad Jarrah (#93) purchased an antenna for a Global Positioning System ("GPS"), other GPS related equipment, and schematics for 757 cockpit instrument diagrams."

It is common knowledge, that a small GPS device cannot overrule a board system on a commercial flight.

It seems, that this "evidence" was planted to cover up an "intelligence failure" or other reasons.

It also was claimed, that Jarrah possessed flight manuals for Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft. However the manuals had been written in arabic language. Officially manuals are only allowed in english language or exist in a japanese dialect. It must have been an inofficial, manual translation. Who did it?

The claim, that Jarrah wasn't on a watch list, is a lie.

As CNN reported in January 2001, the CIA suspected Ziad Jarrah had been in Afghanistan and wanted him questioned because of "his suspected involvement in terrorist activities".

Another interesting fact is, that Ziad Jarrahs uncle Nazem Jarrah worked for east germany intelligence service and as an agent for the Libyan services.

It is well known, that at least since the fall of Berlin Wall, the CIA obtained back-ups of all east intelligence agents.

How many informants did the CIA have on Siad Jarrah?

Also disturbing is a statement of yet another "witness", who claimed, that Jarrah was "among a large group of Middle Eastern men" using an apartment near Lackland Air Force Base (San Antonio, Texas) in the summer of 2001.

Furthermore Jarrah, or another Jarrah with the same name, had another apartment in New York, but the FBI ignores this detail in their profile on Jarrah.

The case Jarrah remains a mystery.

On Edit: While doublechecking some links again, we unfortunately found out, that meanwhile some of them had been shrubbed from the archives.

Only a few could be replaced with links of . The others couldn't be recreated. We might try to replace them with other mirror pages, if we have luck. The San Antonio article was also mentioned at TheMovement.com, some other links had been already mentioned in the LIHOP Pt.2 article, "Tracking All Hijackers"
