Open letter to Congress demanding Investigaton of WMD Lies

David R. Thompson writes "Dear Members of Congress and United States Senate:

I hope that you are not naïve enough or callus enough to believe that I just recently fell off the turnip truck, or that the rest of your collective constituents are too dull or disinterested to know that somebody is lying about who knew the what’s and when’s about weapons of mass destruction allegedly possessed by that ‘Booger of Baghdad’, Saddam Hussein!

There is something unusual about this whole affair (specifically, concerning the veracity of the White House with regard to just what was the evidence suggesting that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction) and the manner in which this information was communicated to the American public and the rest of the world. People that do not usually share the same political opinions are discussing it and demanding answers.

You do remember hearing from the White House last October, when the Administration demanded a resolution from the Congress that would effectively cause the Congress to relinquish any powers of oversight concerning actions by the executive branch, don’t you?

And, certainly, you recall their reluctant and rather petulant acknowledgement, long after you acquiesced to their demands (by passing similar resolutions) that, 'had the administration been precisely truthful about their intentions to wage war with any perceived threat’, they knew that the Congress would not have passed any resolution that, in effect, gave the administration permission to do whatever it wants to do!

In light of the above, it would appear that an inquiry and investigation are warranted and justified in order to discern whether the White House and the Congress are operating under the same interpretation of constitutional law. Forgive my curiosity, but most Americans presume the modis operandi of each branch of this government are the same, and that we have not, since the last presidential election, silently become a nation ruled by proclamation!

I hope that you, collectively, all of you, realize that the mere notion of anyone providing deceptive, misleading, or fraudulent information to the Congress on so grave a matter as causing a war to be initiated, demands investigation.

Anybody within this government that has knowingly attempted to defraud the American people and the Congress by either withholding or manipulating information that perpetrates a fraud, or that in anyway provides less than truthful information to the Congress, has committed a crime!

However, a more compelling issue that ought to be of paramount concern to each congressional representative and senator is the suggestion, that aiding and abetting in a cover-up of the original fraud, if one has occurred, is a far greater crime!

So, the quicker the inquiry, the less potential there is for a conspiracy of silence to develop on the part of anyone who has been less than truthful in the first place, if that’s the case. The more timely the investigation, the less likely it might be that someone would decide that personal loyalty is more patriotic and noble, and that protecting others from scandal, and telling lies in the process is not justifiable in light of the demands of national or homeland security. You certainly don’t want to be a party to fostering the notion that under certain circumstances,’ it’s perfectly okay to prevaricate and otherwise deceive’, because (in the oft expressed reasoning of liars) 'the end justifies the means'. You really wouldn’t want to put across that kind of nattering nonsense for the world to see would you?

An investigation may actually determine the truth, just in case you were not sure where I was going with this.

I do not need to bring up Watergate, but it serves to illustrate that the cover-up of that 'third rate burglary’, (the driving force of the Watergate scandal), that the burglary itself, became almost an forgotten component in light of the conspiracy that developed around it trying to cover it up!

Every nation on the globe wants to know the truth about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq; they want to know the reasons why the United States decided to go to war. Precisely, they want to know what George Bush, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld knew about Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. and British attack, and when they knew it!

The existence of weapons of mass destruction was presented to the American people, the United Nations, the U.S. Congress and the peoples of the world as an absolute certainty. U.N. weapons inspectors did not find any evidence of such weapons before the war, and to date, United States and British military forces have found no evidence of such weapons.

The credibility of the United States is open to speculation without an investigation. The honor of the Bush Administration erodes daily as news organizations have begun to examine the statements and the rationale used by the Bush Administration in making the justifications for war. In comparing the Bush Administrations statements, to statements made by the intelligence agencies and other government officials who, in fact, know what was reported by their respective agencies, there seem to be some glaring discrepancies of fact between the Administration’s version and those of the other reporting agencies.

In other words, the actual evidence that was reported by other agencies to the Bush Administration differs significantly from what the Bush administration told the rest of the world as to what were the facts about Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction! Did the Bush Administration base their decision to go to war on speculative evidence, or was it exaggerated, manipulated or even, made up?

In the absence of an independent prosecutor, I urge the House of Representatives and the United States Senate to immediately establish select committees to hold hearings, with full powers to compel testimony by all relevant individuals, and to publicly publish its results. Hearings behind closed doors by the existing Intelligence Committees are no substitute for open hearings, and I doubt that the American people would put up with such a blatant attempt to hoodwink the rest of us.

The Watergate hearings were the result of a third rate burglary, according to Richard Nixon’s White House staff at the time. The allegations facing this administration’s, however, are far more compelling. Coercing a nation into waging a preemptive war, killing thousands of Iraqi’s, hundreds of American and British soldiers, and jeopardizing thousands of others to possible death and injury, and destabilizing the entire Middle East in the process, demands a sober investigation, immediately!

The apparent inconsistencies in statements, inferences and alleged information provided to the Bush Administration and the subsequent statements made by various members of the administration, demand answers! Somebody somewhere is not telling the truth!

‘What this president knew and when did he know it’, are precisely the questions that need to be asked and demanding the answers is the requirement of every single member of Congress.

No man is above the law, not the president, the vice president, the secretary of defense or the attorney general of the United States.

Do your collective duty as United States Senators and United States Congressional Representatives and begin an investigation, NOW! The fate of this republic is in your hands.
