The United States moved closer to imposing sanctions on Syria, with a key committee in Congress voting in favour of doing so, and the White House voicing support for the action. The US House of Representatives international relations committee on Wednesday voted to impose diplomatic and economic sanctions on Syria, accusing Damascus of supporting terrorism and developing weapons of mass destruction. The committee voted 33-2 in favour of sanctions, and the resolution has a strong chance of being passed when taken up by the full House of Representatives next week. "This legislation will send a message to Damascus and the world that the United States will hold accountable nations that support deadly terrorist groups," said one of the bill's main sponsors, Eliot Engel, a Democrat from New York.
The legislation - the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Act - also seeks to force Damascus to end its occupation of Lebanon.
If passed, the bill could ban US exports to Syria and business investment in that country, downgrade Washington's diplomatic representation, or impose travel restrictions on Syrian diplomats in the US if Damascus did not meet its demands.
A White House spokesman said that US President George Bush had dropped his opposition to the legislation, after opposing the bill behind the scenes for about two years.
