Ex-CIA Officers Want Senate to Probe Leak
Update: Plot against the CIA? Update: MoveOn, handed out affidavits related to the Wilson case (10/22)
DU Analysis: The Neo-CONs Have 'Jumped the Shark' AP -Wed Oct 22
WASHINGTON - Two former CIA officers are asking the Senate Intelligence Committee to open its own investigation into who leaked the identity of an undercover officer. Jim Marcinkowski, a case officer from 1986 to 1989, said a congressional investigation will be needed to demonstrate the credibility of an investigation now under way by the Justice Department. ... Marcinkowski, now deputy city attorney in Royal Oak, Mich., is to appear before the Senate panel Thursday. He and another former CIA officer, Larry Johnson, had requested the meeting, but Johnson will be unable to attend Thursday's session. Johnson also served as the State Department's deputy chief of counterterrorism in the first Bush administration.
...Marcinkowski said he wants to stress to the committee that the leak was an "unprecedented and extremely egregious act." He said he wanted to urge the committee "to say, 'We're going to look at this because it's important.'"
Johnson said: "When you start outing clandestine officers for political reasons, that has to be stopped."
To recap the CIA Reax, so far we've had all of the following calling L'Affaire Plame a matter of treason, and three of them pointing the finger in the direction of the Executive Office Building:
CNSNews -October 22, 2003
The following is a copy of the affidavit handed out to White House employees as they arrived at work on Wednesday morning. About 50 liberal activists, organized by MoveOn.org, organized the demonstration to express their concern about "a White House leak that exposed and endangered an undercover CIA operative." The activists complain it's been 100 days since the CIA employee was "outed," and they accuse the Bush administration of dragging its feet on the investigation
by realpolitik
Because he backed the PNAC group in their little coup d'etat.
And the coup is failing, partially because not all republicans have the balls or desire to take the next goose step along with Ashcroft's brownshirts.
There was also s'posed to be a point where Rove got to stop the
spin machine's defensive spinning, and concentrate again on the offensive 'peace for oil' program. That won't happen now unless some big ass WMD get popped in the USA. Preferably by the Saudis.
So now the PNAC boyz are left hanging, without justice being able to deliver on social control, like they promised. Seems there were more libertarians on the right than they thought, and the center started getting more afraid of John than Osama/Saddam. The left is noisily sharpening knives, and smiling enigmatically.
Cheney was supposed to have the intel under control, and does not, or we would have already 'found' WMD in Iraq. L'Affaire Plame has really set the whole intel community against Bush, they bent over and took it for him once over 911, they were not in a mood to do it again, and then the WH outed Plame to threaten Wilson. The PNAC boys in a moment of monumental ego took on State, and the CIA in one stroke.
Rummy was supposed to have Iraq and Afghanistan Stablilized, and Powell was to keep the UN in line. They have both failed miserably.
Alienating the Pentagon and the U.N. with the same gusto that Cheney and Rove have pissed off the CIA. Apperently the only one who is getting the job done is Rice, because she is not in the news.
It is an open secret that the world regards the US/British axis as a threat to world peace. What Rove is no longer able to hide is the fact that the rest of the world is mobilizing to do to us what we did to the Soviet Union-- make us spend our way into oblivion. Bush, because it makes his handlers happy, is a conspiritor to the plot to drown the American Government/Economy in the bathtub. Of course, in the process he and his will get rich as Crassus.
When you are that arrogant and aggressive, people tend to, well... bushwhack you...they eschew direct confrontation, but sniple from the flanks. Our flank, in case no one is paying attention, is the economy.
An additional tax break for the rich is a bridge too far for America. BAD THINGS(tm) will happen, such as the loss of ALL foreign investment in our economy, out of fear of a crash, which will of course deepen the crash. Grover's boyz do not want a crash. Because they remember the last crash, and what came from it.
Grover does not actually want Bush to drown the government in the bathtub, me merely wants it to stay weak enough that it will not fight back when he molests it. Bush will succeed in doing what Grover does not want. Why? Because the Bush administration is full of whores. In our great white father's brothel, there are many johns.
I do not believe that Bush's vast league of enemies (and by no means are the majority of these Democrats) will allow him to sink it much farther before he is impeached, and many of of his followers fall hard from a high place. I wonder if DeLay will be smart enough to save himself by turning on the administration. DeLay is trying to hold the line on Westar, and cannot take it on the chin for the Party, or anyone else.
The whole pantheon against Bush are in rising right now, at the point of greatest infighting among the admin. Politically, George is a dead man walking, and Arnold did not help the admin's popularity any with the true believers. Like the Kata Strophe in a Greek tragedy, hubris has reached the point where the Gods avenge themselves on the Protagonist. Generally, it is greater than the offense, so I would not hang around Dubya without wearing rubber overshoes, even indoors.
Plot against the CIA?Ex-agents: CIA leak a serious betrayal
CNN Interview with Johnson and Marchinkowski (10/24)
BILL HEMMER, CNN: Larry, tell me, what's the damage, though. Be specific, as best you can right now. Have lives been lost? Have people been sacrificed?
JOHNSON: I don't know if lives have been lost yet, but we have to start with the damage to Mrs. Wilson. Her life has been put at risk. The people that she was working with overseas who were spies, they are potentially at risk. You could potentially have people dead because of this. But the odds of finding that out as far as the CIA coming forth and detailing it, we are not likely to hear that because they have to protect the sources and methods.
HEMMER: Jim, you appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday. Can you tell us what happened.
MARCHINKOWSKI: First off, the hearing was held by Senator Rockefeller and Senator Roberts on 72-hour notice. They were receptive to our request to have a closed session of the Intelligence Committee. Obviously it was a closed session, but I can say this. I believe all the members were very concerned. They were very sincere in their concern and I have confidence that they are going to do the right thing.
HEMMER: After listening to Larry, it sounds like, essentially the sky is falling in terms of the CIA around the world. Do you see it that way and did you get that sense in the hearing?
MARCHINKOWSKI: Yes, I did. I think the message is out there. This is an unprecedented act. This has never been done by the United States government before. The exposure of an undercover intelligence officer by the U.S. government is unprecedented. It's not the usual leak from Washington. The leak a week scenario is not at play here. This is a very, very serious event.
HEMMER: You are both registered Republicans, right? How concerned are you about the political gain that one side or the other may seek in this?
JOHNSON: That's what we have to get out of this. I don't know, Bill if you have any kids, they've gone to school on "opposite day" where they wear their clothes inside out and wear their shoes on the wrong feet. I feel like we're seeing opposite day. If a Democrat had done this, we would see the Republicans up in arms.
As a Republican, I think we need to be consistent on this. It doesn't matter who did it, it didn't matter which party was involved. This isn't about partisan politics. This is about protecting national security and national security assets and in this case there has been a betrayal, not only of the CIA officers there, but really a betrayal of those of us who have kept the secrets over the years on this point.
HEMMER: Do you think the leaker will be caught?
JOHNSON: I'm doubtful.
MARCHINKOWSKI: I have a little more hope. I hope that they will find this person and maybe they'll be exposed.
CIA 'overstated case for war'
BBC -Friday, 24 October, 2003
A key committee of the US Congress is preparing to issue a damning criticism of the quality of intelligence on Iraq before the war.
According to the Washington Post newspaper, the Senate Intelligence Committee will focus its criticism on the CIA and its director George Tennet.
It is not clear when the report will be released.
According to the Washington Post, the Senate Intelligence Committee will be highly critical of intelligence it believes overstated the case against Saddam Hussein.
The committee will attack the quality of evidence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and its alleged links with terrorism.
Members of the committee were surprised by the amount of circumstantial evidence, the quantity of information that was disputed or had only one source.
The chairman of the committee, Republican Senator Pat Roberts, said the Bush administration was ill-served by the intelligence community.
