U.S. rejected last minute deal with Saddam
NEW YORK, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The New York Times says it has learned the United States early this year rejected frantic, secret pleas from Saddam Hussein that might have avoided war. The Times reported Thursday the opportunity initially presented itself even as American soldiers massed on the Iraqi border in March and diplomats argued about war.
It occurred when an influential Pentagon adviser received a secret message from a Lebanese-American businessman: Saddam Hussein wanted to make a deal. The businessman was told Saddam wanted Washington to know Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and was willing to allow American troops and experts to conduct a search. The businessman told the Times the Iraqis also offered to hand over a man accused of being involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and at one point, he said, the Iraqis even pledged to hold elections. Although the messages from Baghdad were relayed to various Pentagon, CIA and administration officials, they were all rejected for various reasons. Guardian -Thursday November 6, 2003 Richard Perle, an influential adviser to the Pentagon, received a secret message from a Lebanese-American businessman indicating that Saddam wanted to make a deal, ABC News and the New York Times reported last night.
