AP/Newsday -December 4, 2003 HAMBURG, Germany -- A Westchester woman whose brother was the pilot of the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001 appealed to a German court on Thursday to give a Moroccan suspect the maximum sentence, if convicted on charges of supporting the attacks. Debra Burlingame, of Pelham Manor, N.Y., was one of four relatives of Sept. 11 victims who traveled to this northern port city to testify in the trial of Abedelghani Mzoudi, seeking to bolster the government's case by speaking about their losses. Burlingame's brother, Charles Burlingame, died just short of his 52nd birthday.
...More than 20 Americans have formally joined the prosecution as co-plaintiff's against Mzoudi, only the second Sept. 11 suspect to stand trial anywhere. He is accused of more than 3,000 counts of accessory to murder and membership in a terrorist organization for allegedly giving logistical aid to the three suicide hijackers who lived and studied in Hamburg. Burlingame's appearance was her first confronting someone accused of contributing to the Sept. 11 plot. All four Americans were in the courtroom when Mzoudi entered, but he averted his gaze and then never looked up during more than three hours of their testimonials, casting his head to the floor as his translator spoke. Mzoudi denies the charges. His attorneys have argued that while he was close to the members of the cell, he was unaware of their plans.
