Iran: US Gov considering to work with Terror Group (NY Post)posted by ewing2001 on Friday May 30, @12:20PM![]() from the dept.
http://www.nypost.com/news/worldnews/58236.htm Prez woos 'terror' ally vs. IranBy NILES LATHEM May 30, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - "...The Bush administration is considering giving secret support to a terrorist group as part of a massive new covert operation to destabilize the ayatollahs ruling Iran, it was revealed yesterday. Administration officials confirmed to The Post last night that a proposal to get in bed with the Mujahedin e-Khalq, an anti-government group based in Iraq and once supported by Saddam Hussein, is being pushed by Pentagon hard-liners as part of a new get-tough policy to force a regime change in Tehran.
Officials stressed President Bush has made no final decisions on either trying to overthrow Iran's fanatic leaders or using the MEK. The officials added that supporting the MEK is a controversial idea within the administration because the group is on the State Department list of terrorist organizations and there are other student and reformist groups in Iran that could also receive support under any new covert action program..." South Asia Analyst Group on MEK vs. UShttp://www.saag.org/papers7/paper700.html Paper no. 700 -29. 05. 2003 "... 11. The beginning of this psywar campaign was marked by two significant events. The first was the reported decision of the US Central Command not to arrest the leaders of the Mujahideen-e-Khalq (MEK), an anti-Teheran Iranian terrorist organisation, who were operating against Iran from sanctuaries in Iraq provided by the Iraqi intelligence. Amongst the pretexts cited by the US and the UK for invading Iraq and overthrowing the Saddam regime was its alleged nexus with terrorists. The MEK is designated by the US State Department as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation under a 1996 US law, which entails punitive consequences such as freezing of its bank accounts etc. The annual report of the State Department on Patterns of Global Terrorism during 2001 said of the MEK: " Since resettling in Iraq in 1987, the group has conducted internal security operations in support of the Government of Iraq." 12. It was an international crime for the Saddam Government to use the MEK against Iran to serve Iraqi national interests, but it would not be a crime for the US to similarly use the MEK to serve US national objectives against Teheran. That seems to be the belief of the Bush Administration. It is apparent that it is keeping the MEK as a reserve for possible use against Teheran should it decide to bring about a change of regime in Iran as it used the Kurd terrorists against the Saddam regime..."
