Accused Bali bomber Amrozi bin Nurhasyim claimed an American or Israeli nuclear device, rather than his own explosives, may have been used in the October 12 attack which killed 88 Australians.
Amrozi proposed the elaborate conspiracy theory as he opened his defence against charges that he helped plan and carry out the bombing. He also said the bomb attack some "positive effects". Declaring himself a "human being in mourning", Amrozi said he prayed that non-Muslim families who lost loved ones in the attack, which altogether killed 202 people, would be given "a better replacement". Amrozi previously declared he was not sorry for killing so many Australians and said he was ready to accept any punishment for his "jihad" (holy war). But on Monday, the so-called smiling assassin sought to minimise his role in the attacks. The four planning meetings he previously told investigators he attended did not really occur, he said. He fabricated the account under the strain of interrogations that went from 10am until 3am the next day. He also feared being tortured, he said. The 40-year-old village mechanic said he doubted the Mitsubishi van used in the car bomb, which led police to track him down last November, was really his. And the 600 kilograms of the explosive chemical potassium chlorate that he sent from East Java to Bali were not sufficient to cause the devastation in Kuta. His own brother, Ali Imron, has testified that 900 kilograms were used in the attack. Instead, Amrozi suggested the bomb may have been a "mini nuclear" device set off after tracking by American or Israeli satellites. "Up to now I still have doubts that kind of explosion with that many victims was caused by the car I sent," Amrozi, who faces the death penalty, told the court. "I wouldn't blame people who said it was some kind of mini nuclear bomb." He said the US and Israel satellite devices that could have tracked the car bomb and detonated an explosion as the car drove down Legian Street in Kuta's nightclub strip. Related Articles:

Problem! How on earth do you squeeze 8,000 pounds of

US warned Indonesia of terror threat

terrorist groups posing a threat to westerners,

Explosives Used in Bali Likely of US Origin

Indonesian police investigating the devastating
bombing of a nightclub on the island of Bali have
found traces of plastic explosive at the site of the
attack.
Police say C4 explosive was used - a type manufactured
mainly in the United States and used widely by
military forces around the world.
Bali Explosive 'linked to CIA'

have come from supplies handed over to the Mujahideen
by the CIA during the Soviet occupation of
Afghanistan.
The same plastic explosive, known as C4, was used in
