"...Air Force One landed at Fort Lauderdale Jet Center at 4 p.m., and Bush was whisked to the Hyatt Pier 66 hotel for a 5:30 p.m. reception.
An estimated 400 protesters crowded 17th Street opposite the hotel, lining the sidewalk in front of a nearby Hess gas station and chanting slogans such as ``1-2-3-4, Bush and Cheney out the door!''
Fort Lauderdale police, including officers on horseback and in boats in nearby canals, kept a tight rein on the crowd, which grew throughout the afternoon as people finished work for the day..." Boston Indymedia reported, that "Ashcroft came to Boston to promote the Patriot Act to local police, behind closed doors. It is estimated that 1200 people were there to protest."

Ashcroft's appearance so close to the emotional anniversary at Federal Hall in the Wall Street neighborhood just blocks from the destroyed World Trade Center, angered civil liberties groups who gathered about 1,500 demonstrators as he spoke.
"...Outside the hall, hundreds of protesters argued that Ashcroft's act defied the civil liberties that the early patriots sought to protect during debates at Faneuil Hall two centuries ago.
''Shame, shame, shame,'' they chanted as Ashcroft was whisked away through the barricades in a car with tinted windows.
''This is eroding our liberties,'' said Christine Downing, 58, of the Charlestown section of Boston. ''It's an end run around the Bill of Rights.''
The crowd, which gathered at 8 a.m. and chanted throughout Ashcroft's speech, carried signs saying: ''Ashcroft's Patriot Act: The work of a traitor'', ''Be a real patriot oppose the Patriot Act'' and ''Ashcroft more evil than Steinbrenner,'' a reference to the owner of the New York Yankees.
