Security Guard Injured in Clash with British Troopsposted by NYC on Monday May 05, @12:43PMfrom the Iraq dept. Ananova, Monday, May 5, 2003 A security guard working for Al-Jazeera has been injured in a confrontation with British troops in Basra. The Ministry of defence says soldiers carrying out routine patrols in the southern Iraqi city came under fire earlier today, prompting a series of inquiries at homes in the nearby area. Continued.
An armed man guarding a house being used as an office for the Arab satellite TV channel suffered minor injuries after refusing to hand over his weapon. An MoD spokeswoman said: "One of our patrols was in the area of the Al-Jazeera house where Al-Jazeera people are working. "It came under fire from shots within the area - not necessarily from the Al-Jazeera house. "They met Al-Jazeera guards who were armed - but this is not unusual for Basra. "They were advised to hand over the weapons and refused to do so. In the ensuing struggling there was an injury, but no shots were fired." The guards were subsequently relieved of their weapons, the spokeswoman added. Al-Jazeera has been unavailable for comment, but has reported troops stormed the bureau, beating and wounding a guard.
