Windows2000 and NT go open source! (inadvertently) - slashdot.orgposted by admin on Friday February 13, @06:30AMfrom the wonk dept.
Updated: Microsoft probes secret code leak PeterHammer writes "Neowin.net is reporting that Windows 2000 and Windows NT source code has been leaked to the internet. More on this as we hear it." ...A quick peek around indeed shows something named Windows.Source.Code.w2k.nt4.wxp.tar circulating, but this had to happen sooner or later, considering the number of institutions with access to the source. Wonder how long it'll take before a torrent of new worms using newly discovered security holes tear up the net. ..."The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later." Later isn't going to work, since the server was down even before it hit the Slashdot front page. I empathize with their server. I did, however, managed to grab the news blurb (but not the, at that point, 214 comments) from the intermittent front page: Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing. This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about. more...http://slashdot.org source... http://www.democraticunderground.com

DARPA's Creepy Bioengineering Program
DARPA Bioengineering Program Seeks to Turn Soldiers Into Cyborgs
Not long ago, the public was stunned by the practical and
moral idiocy of the Pentagon researcher (and unprosecuted
war criminal) John Poindexter, who proposed a 'football
pool' scheme for predicting terrorist attacks. We all
laughed at such insanity and were relieved to see the scheme
speedily deep-sixed. However, this bit of lunacy was just
the lightest ice in the tip of the very large, very dark
iceberg that the Pentagon's research program, better known
as DARPA, has become.
Just a few weeks before the bizarro world 'terrorism
gambling' project was exposed, a DARPA (which stands for
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)-sponsored
conference was held in Washington, DC, that showcased the
latest love child of the Bush Pentagon: military
bioengineering.

Scandal continues: Maryland Governor Orders Voting System Security Study (WP 08/07) New Security Woes for E-Vote FirmWired -
Following an embarrassing leak of its proprietary software over a file transfer protocol site last January, the inner workings of Diebold Election Systems have again been laid bare. A hacker has come forward with evidence that he broke the security of a private Web server operated by the embattled e-vote vendor, and made off last spring with Diebold's internal discussion-list archives, a software bug database and more software.

Forget about Surveillance, Face Recognition and PATRIOT II- Inside the Movement for Posthuman Rights Cyborg Liberation Frontby Erik Baard Village Voice July 30 - August 5, 2003
Once out of nature I shall never take My bodily form from any natural thing, But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make Of hammered gold and gold enamelling Yeats's wish, expressed in his poem "Sailing to Byzantium," was a governing principle for those attending the World Transhumanist Association conference at Yale University in late June. International academics and activists, they met to lay the groundwork for a society that would admit as citizens and companions intelligent robots, cyborgs made from a free mixing of human and machine parts, and fully organic, genetically engineered people who aren't necessarily human at all.

Just What The Enviornment Needs More Radioactive CloudsAdministration moves ahead on nuclear 'bunker busters'By Dan Stober Mercury News Demonstrating a significant shift in America's nuclear strategy, the Bush administration intends to produce -- not just research -- a thermonuclear bunker-busting bomb to destroy hardened, deeply buried targets, the Pentagon has acknowledged for the first time.
The weapon -- known as the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator -- would be a full-power hydrogen bomb that would throw up enormous clouds of radioactive dust while wreaking large-scale damage and death if used in an urban area. It would be thousands of times more powerful than the conventional ``bunker busters'' dropped on Baghdad in an attempt to kill former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
According to a variety of participants, impetus for a renewed interest in battlefield nuclear weapons comes primarily from civilian Pentagon officials such as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his second-in-command, Paul Wolfowitz, rather than uniformed generals and admirals.
``I've talked to the military extensively, and I don't know anybody
in the military who thinks they need a nuclear weapon to accomplish this,''
said U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher, a Walnut Creek Democrat whose district includes Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
``If you can find somebody in a uniform in the Defense Department who
can talk about a new need'' for nuclear bunker busters ``without laughing, I'll
buy him a cup of coffee,'' said Robert Peurifoy, a retired vice president of Sandia National Laboratory. The New Mexico lab fashions the outer casings and other non-nuclear aspects of nuclear weapons and will play a role in the project.
