Mohamed Atta, the mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, lived in a Wayne motel for about a year before the attacks, state police said Thursday.

The revelation - the first time authorities have placed Atta in the motel - came after state police Superintendent Joseph R. Fuentes testifed Thursday afternoon before the Assembly Homeland Security Committee about his agency's efforts to combat terrorism.

In his testimony, Fuentes confirmed what officials had said previously: New Jersey was one of the launching points for the Sept. 11 attacks and that some of the 19 hijackers moved through New Jersey hotels and used New Jersey-based criminal networks to obtain identification documents.

Fuentes would not go into detail, but Sgt. Kevin Rehmann, a state police spokesman, later said Fuentes was referring to Atta. Rehmann said Atta had lived in the Wayne Motor Inn on Route 23 for a year. Atta is thought to have been the ringleader of the Sept. 11 attacks and was on American Airlines Flight 11, which slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center.

Rehmann could not provide dates for Atta's stay or say whether other hijackers stayed at the motel. He said the matter was still under investigation.

A clerk at the motel said Thursday night he had worked there for only a month and had no knowledge of past guests.

The Record has previously reported that several of the terrorists were seen in Passaic County and that two unidentified terrorists stayed at the Wayne motel.

Two days after the attacks, FBI agents searched the Wayne Motor Inn's guest records and took copies of several receipts, hotel employees said at the time.

The motel has been used as a filming location for several episodes of "The Sopranos."

At the Izumi Hibachi Steakhouse, next door to the motel, FBI agents interviewed employees and seized receipts because several suspected hijackers ate there, employees said. An employee said on condition of anonymity that one of the men asked which way was east. According to Islamic custom, worshipers must face east, toward Mecca, as they pray.

Agents visited the restaurant twice, the employees said.

Atta also allegedly visited a seafood store about 500 feet from the hotel, accompanied by another hijacker, Marwan Al-Shehhi. The store owner told The Record that he identified the two hijackers in photographs that FBI agents showed him.

Fuentes said at Thursday's hearing that northern New Jersey, in particular, remains a possible terrorist target because of its large population and proximity to New York City.

"We need to be more vigilant than other parts of the country,'' he said.

He said two dozen state police detectives have been assigned to the state Office of Counterterrorism to guard against attacks.

Fuentes also said his agency opens the state's emergency operations center in West Trenton and regional operations centers in Jersey City and Buena Vista in South Jersey - staffing them 24 hours a day - whenever the federal Department of Homeland Security raises the terrorism threat alert level to orange.

In December 2002, the FBI suddenly announced that "none of the hijackers possessed New Jersey identification, real or counterfeit, which was announced by U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., chairman of the House Democratic Task Force on Homeland Security.

The day after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, Maine Gov. Angus S. King Jr. said two of the airline hijackers apparently used New Jersey driver's licenses when they flew to Boston from Portland. The report has been cited by Gov. James E. McGreevey and his administration in seeking support for a $200 million overhaul of the state Division of Motor Vehicles."

Atta's Jersey Tracks

Members of the State of New Jersey's Assembly heard testimony from police Superintendent Joseph R. Fuentes Thursday (June 19, 2003) about his agency's efforts to combat terrorism. He noted that New Jersey was one of the launching points for the Sept. 11 attacks, a state where the terrorists roamed from Paterson to Wayne.

And New Jersey IS important. There are long-term relationships of terrorists in New Jersey from the 1993 World Trade Center attacks forward. Think "Egypt" and "Muslim Brothers" in addition to CIA assets and activities. An excellent book for background is Richard Labeviere's "Dollars for Terror: The United States and Islam" written in 1999 naming the CIA as a financing spigot for the Muslim Brothers since 1956, while a number of them populate New Jersey.

Venice, FL was a Sept. 11 crime scene and Atta residence. So too was Wayne, NJ -- fleetingly for Atta. Yet nothing was mentioned by the FBI in its September 27, 2001 press release about Mohamed Atta or Marwan Alshehhi connections to Venice or Wayne (http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel01/092701hjpic.htm). This was despite the fact that in both states the FBI had been on location obtaining leases, room charge records, credit card receipts, and witness statements within hours of the Sept. 11 attacks.

While professing to seek information from the public, why were these two strategic locales omitted by the FBI in their descriptions of Atta and Alshehhi hangouts? Is there something to hide in both locations? Or, as the case appears now, just something to hide in Florida?

The Bergen County Record on June 20, 2003 wrote: "Mohamed Atta, the mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, lived in a Wayne (NJ) motel for about a year before the attacks." Sgt. Kevin Rehmann, a state police spokesman, added "Atta had lived in the Wayne Motor Inn on Route 23 for a year."

These misleading statements suggest that Mohamed Atta wasn't living in Venice, FL, wasn't attending either Jones Aviation or Huffman Aviation, and wasn't hanging around the Venice area as otherwise attested by numeous witnesses in many mainstream news articles immediately after the attacks.

WHY did this spokesperson in New Jersey come forward to suggest an exclusivity of residence by Atta in the Garden State? Are we to believe that Atta only made guest appearances on the Atlantic Coast of Florida to get drunk at Shukum's, or vacation in Key West for a wild weekend of cocaine and alcohol abuse with his German friends, to then return to New Jersey?

The short shift is given to Venice, which was indeed Atta's most important operational base, a locale where he not only arrived in June 2000 to train at nearby Jones Aviation in Sarasota, but at Huffman Aviation in Venice by July 3. There he enrolled and trained through December 20 and received his FAA check ride on December 21, 2000. Atta's landlord in Nokomis, FL, Venice firefighter Steve Kona, assisted the FBI by providing the 6-month lease for the same July 2000 - early January 2001 period. Moreover, Kona would mow the lawn and see the brooding and unfriendly Atta and gregarious Alshehhi, though there are a few gaps where Atta wasn't seen in Venice between July and December and likely visited facilitators in New Jersey. Particularly suspect would be anyone connected to the Muslim Brothers.

Atta's next landlord in North Port (a berg attached to Venice) stated Atta was still at Huffman Aviation - two months post commercial pilot certification and upon his return from a week-long trip to Spain in January - February 2001. Atta's neighbors in Venice during the months of March and April, 2001 also identified the specific apartment at the Sandpiper across from Huffman Aviation where Atta lived with Amanda Keller.

As if these few people are not enough, try former Huffman employees, and Atta's girlfriend, Amanda Keller, who also said Atta was flying for Dekkers-Hilliard related Huffman Aviation winter-April 2001. Yet other locals were quoted in the Toronto Star Sept. 16, 2001: "Atta said he was flying for the rich man."

Is this a mistake on the part of the New Jersey police spokesman, or another smokescreen? Is the information provided by Amanda Keller, that Atta met weekly with his German friends from Munich, too explosive for law enforcement to touch? The fact that Atta was seen with a wealthy Saudi businessman on at least two occasions during the winter of 2001 might be just too scandalous for the White House to handle, or "contrary to foreign policy" set by the White House (see Past Issues at http://www.madcowmorningnews.com about Atta's life in Venice, FL).

Atta was a pilot, and was trained to create diversions. He was part of CIA-wired Wally Hilliard's pipeline with connections to New Jersey. Atta's wealthy Saudi businessman and other bank wire sponsors provided all the cash he and the operation needed. Atta therefore had the motive, money and capacity to pay for a motel room for a year in Wayne, NJ whether he needed it or not.

Atta checked into the Wayne Motor Inn following arrival June 3, 2000, and likely "dragged over" on periodic flights from Florida to New Jersey. The Bergen County Record couldn't seem to find witnesses in New Jersey, save for a few who sighted Atta and Alshehhi together at a restaurant, and others who noted Atta visiting other terrorists staying in Paterson. Atta is also reported to have rented apartments in Brooklyn. All of this is consistent with the the mode of operation of the mobile and wiley Mohamad Atta. One FBI agent even described him as a "club flyer."

According to Tom Hammersley of Jones Aviation, Atta and Alshehhi were already 3/4 through their private pilot training when they arrived in Sarasota in June 2000, sent there by Rudi Dekkers. Is it possible the terrorists began their training at a Rudi Dekkers- Wally Hilliard-related flight school in New Jersey? And have New Jersey authorities checked local flight schools and covert hangouts, or has the Federal government said hands off?

Apparently CIA Director George Tenet wishes he never heard of Venice, FL, just like FBI Director Robert Mueller and Attorney General John Ashcroft. This past week was another in which Tenet met behind closed doors with Senate Armed Services Committee and Senate Intelligence Committee members. This time it's over Weapons of Mass Destruction and Iraq issues. C-Span billed the events of June 17-19 as "personnel hearings" that would not be televised. Senate Judiciary continues its private sit-downs with FBI Director Mueller. And House Government Reform continues to ponder the surge in heroin hitting the Atlantic states from late 1999 through 2001, while Wally Hilliard lost a LearJet to federal authorities when caught with 43 pounds of heroin on board in Orlando, FL July 25, 2000.

If New Jersey's state police choose to lockstep with the CIA and FBI, who then will crack the 9-11 case? Will New Jersey scratch deeply into the Atta-Hilliard-Dekkers connections and operations in their state, to make the United States a safer place for all of us?
